OF POSEIDON by Anna Banks

Of Poseidon
Anna Banks

Rating: A
Synopsis from goodreads.com:
Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen — literally, ouch! — both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

My thoughts on the book:
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Of Poseidon. I didn't know if it'd be "another mermaid tale," or if it'd stand out from the crowd. I was pleasantly surprised, and Of Poseidon definitely exceeded my expectations. Banks has a unique writing style and voice. I enjoyed the alternating POVs (first person for Emma and third person limited for Galen). The sense of humor makes this book a light read, and I laughed out loud more than once. The plot is intriguing and the world that Banks created is captivating.

Of Poseidon is written differently than any book I've ever read. There is no action to speak of, other than one event in the beginning and a girl fight a little later on. Even the climax of the novel has no action, but it does have a big reveal. There really was no "bad guy." It's an interesting concept that I found myself actually liking. The lack of action didn't bother me. I wasn't bored once. This novel grabbed me on the first page and did not let me go until the very end. This is a fast paced read, and I lost track of time as I submerged myself in Banks' world.

Emma is a likable character. She's feisty and clumsy, both traits come across as charming instead of annoying. She goes through some terrible things, but she comes out stronger for it. She doesn't dwell on the past and whine about it. She takes charge of her life and makes the best of each situation that's given to her. I really admired her for that, and for the fact that she isn't willing to give up her dreams for some guy. It was fun being inside her head because she has such a unique take on the world. Any time a leading character describes herself as being as clumsy as "an intoxicated walrus," you know she's going to be a fun narrator.

Galen is also likable, and while he's a bit disconnected from humanity, he still has some very human reactions. He makes some pretty dumb mistakes, but overall, he's a good guy. I was rooting for him the entire time. I really liked seeing things from his view as well, and I'm glad that Banks didn't do first person with him, too. It helped keep the two POVs separate.

The secondary characters are also well-developed and complex. I'm not sure what makes any of them tick really, but they're all interesting and add a lot of layers (and humor) to the story.

The plot is intriguing and mysterious, even if there is no action or "bad guy." There's still a sense of urgency because Galen's entire race is on the verge of a giant war that would likely make all of them extinct. Since Galen is likable, I didn't want that to happen. I also wanted Galen and Emma to get together, so I wanted things to work out for them, too. The ending is a cliffhanger, and a bit of a surprise. I tossed the idea around some, but I wasn't sure until the very end if I was right or not. I hate cliffhangers (hence the A instead of A+), but I feel that enough questions were answered that I'm looking forward to the next book without a sense of bitterness.

The one thing that did bother me about Of Poseidon is that it kept sounding like Banks was calling dolphins and whales fish. I'm pretty sure she meant marine life in general, since she included turtles, otters, and penguins in with Emma's gift as well. Still, though, she kept saying fish right after a dolphin or whale encounter and that bugged me. There has to be a better way to specify the difference between mammal and fish, though I'm not 100% sure what that might be.

Overall, I'd recommend Of Poseidon to anyone who wants a good summer read. If you enjoy mermaid tales or love stories, then this book is for you!

Writing Advice
Hey Annabelle, welcome to Fall Into Books. Thank you so much for being here today!

Thanks, Amber, for having me on your blog today! You and I have a lot in common, including our love of our Keurig coffee brewers, our Kindles, and our passion for writing stories. Since I’m asked often about how I decided to write a book, I’d like to share with your readers today my experience in writing my first novella Frozen Heart.

It was a dark and stormy night...

No, not really. I’m totally yanking your chain. I was working as a freelance journalist and I knew I wanted to write a book. Countless hours of online research about the publishing industry and all the new fangled options available to writers today left me overwhelmed but excited. Simultaneously, I infiltrated the Twitterverse of romance writers, learning as much as I could from the amazing authors who share and teach and encourage those around them. And after all of this research, the countless hours spent looking for the secret to success in the publishing world, the painstaking dissection of other authors’ climb to the top of the slush pile, I walked away with one clear answer.

Do the work.

Now, you can take this to mean you have to actually do the writing part (which, is kind of, well, DUH), but “the work” so much more than just writing. You have to learn how to do the hard, back breaking, ego crushing, and very UNglamorous work. Conclude the nice little pat on the back you gave yourself for getting to the finish line of word count and grab your big girl/boy undies, because writing a first draft is not the finish line, it’s the loud bang of the pistol at the beginning of a very long marathon.

There are edits to be made (I recommend 5 times at a minimum), synopses and query letters to be written, and submissions guidelines to find and follow. None of these things can be skipped. There are no shortcuts. Do not pass “go”. Do not collect $200. You catch my drift? This is the work that, if done correctly, gets you past the gatekeepers and onto the desks of Those Who Choose the Books.

Only when I understood the true undertaking of my endeavor did I muster up the courage to write Frozen Heart. Because even after seeing all of the work I’d have to do  outside of telling the story, and how much of it would go unrecognized even in the event that my book was published (and YAY because it is), I still wanted to write it. And that, my friends, is when I decided I wanted to write a book.

DEARLY, DEPARTED by Lia Habel

Dearly, Departed
Lia Habel

Rating: B
Synopsis from goodreads.com:
Love can never die.

Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?

The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.

But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances. Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.

In Dearly, Departed, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concept of undying love.

My thoughts on the book:
This novel started out a bit slow, but I enjoyed Dearly, Departed after I got through the first few chapters. Habel's unique world drew me in, and the dynamic characters kept me intrigued. I had a hard time putting this book down. The one thing I didn't like was the fact that there were five narrators. If it wasn't for that, then this book would have gotten an A from me!

The multiple narrators really annoyed me. I don't feel that we needed a chapter with Wolfe's POV, nor did we need Pamela's POV. I think we could have learned about what was going on in New London from Bram's POV, when he spoke to Wolfe or heard something new. Victor's POV was necessary, I think, as were Bram's and Nora's. I liked all of the characters fine (even the villains were interesting), but the multiple POVs just annoyed me. Everything was first person, too, so the multiple POVs could have also been eliminated with a third person omniscient POV.

Nora was a pretty awesome heroine. She was strong, stubborn, and an all around good person. I really liked the fact that she thought Bram was attractive even though he was dead (and in some ways looked dead). She seemed to love him because of his imperfections, not in spite of them. That within itself was a beautiful thing. Also, her loyalty and bravery made me like her even more. I am really looking forward to reading what happens to her next.

Bram was super sweet and amazing. He was never angsty or emo, and he had reason to be. He treated Nora like a person, too. He stood up for what he thought was right, and I admired him for that. He was also pretty funny. I liked his sarcastic, snarky sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed reading from his perspective, and he completely won me over. Team Bram all the way!

I wasn't Pamela's hugest fan, but she was all right. I usually get annoyed with the best friends, so the fact that she was all right in my book says a lot. She really cared about Nora, and she was selfless. She was just clueless at some points, and the way she threw herself at Michael irritated me. As flawed as she was, I was rooting for her, and I hope the next book brings her happiness.

Victor was an interesting character, and I'd like to know more about him. I'm not going to spoil this for those who haven't read it, but he was very intriguing.

The first few chapters were world-building chapters, and Habel did a terrific job of describing the futuristic society that she created. I particularly liked the hologram movies, and how when they used modern colloquial words, they said "as our ancestors used to say..." before it. That really made me feel like I was in New Victoria. I also liked the small touches, such as the parasols with the lights on top that indicated if the girls were practicing the "antiquated ritual" of dating, if they had been betrothed, or if they were gay. Items like that showed that this was a futuristic society and not historical Victorian society. Another thing that really stood out to me was the punks and how they were like futuristic steampunks. I enjoyed reading about them and hope to learn more about them in the sequel.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to steampunk, dystopian, and zombie fans. Dearly, Departed is a unique and touching love story that you don't want to miss.

Follow Friday #20

This is a meme hosted every Friday by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, where book bloggers answer a question each week and check out how others answered it. It's a cool way for bloggers and viewers to connect and learn more about each other!

If you can't follow via GFC, then please follow via NetworkedBlogs or e-mail! :)

Please state in the post if you're a new follower or old follower. If you don't tell me that you are following, then I don't know that you are. Therefore, I'll not follow you back. I would like to follow each and every one of you back, so it is important that you clearly state that you are following me and not just stopping by. When someone says, "just saying hi!" or "just hopping through!" then I have no idea if you are following or not. That means that I may or may not return the visit, depending on how much time I have. The people who state they are following me will definitely get a visit and follow back. Also be sure to leave a link back to your blog, otherwise I won't know where to go to follow you! Thank you.
